Hey #TeamPumpUp, meet member @shannondancer11. Shannon is a 19 year old college student who’s been a passionate dancer ever since she was a toddler wearing her first tutu. She’s furthering her dance education at college in Massachusetts, working towards her goal of becoming a dance teacher.
We chatted with Shannon to learn more about how she stays motivated and commits to her goals, while still making time for studying, friends, and fun. She has the kind of “can-do” attitude and radiance that personifies the community we’re building at PumpUp. She’s a great inspiration for eating healthy on-the-go and making time for exercise.

What advice would you share with someone who’s looking to balance a busy school schedule while staying motivated to reach their health goals?
Being in college, trying to stay motivated to still go to the gym and eat healthy is difficult. After a long day of class, the last thing you want to do is go for a run or lift some weights. And yes, the café cookies do look good, but eating at the salad bar will help you look good.
To help me stay motivated, I try to always go to the gym with a buddy and I always write down on my calendar to remind myself to go. Lately, I have been trying to incorporate more cardio in my workouts, such as running and cycling. I have always wanted to be a good runner but the only way to become good at anything is to keep practicing. I have a mini running/cardio log in my journal to keep me motivated.
What’s the new, healthy habit you’re working on? What's been most helpful in achieving your goals?
Being a dancer, fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle has always been important to me. However, within my last year I have really updated my workouts and have been exploring other ways to in shape.
What’s your go-to quick breakfast before class?
At college, I have an 8am twice a week, at 9:40am once a week, then I start class at 11:30am twice a week. Seeing that I am a teenager, I like to sleep as much as possible. Therefore quick breakfasts always come in handy. Normally, I will grab a protein bar to try to get my 30 in 30…meaning trying to eat 30g of protein within the first 30 min of being awake. If I am not feeling a protein bar, I will grad some cereal or make some oatmeal and eat it on my way to class.
What’s your post-workout fuel?
After my workouts, I like to have some chocolate milk or something with some peanut butter.
What makes you feel the most confident?
I feel the most confident when I finish a good workout or when I am dressed up and feel comfortable in my own skin.
What’s your favorite fitness activity to do with friends?
My favorite things that I like to do with my friends are going for walks around campus and take pictures of the beautiful things around us, doing yoga on a warm spring/fall afternoon in the park or scheduling “gym dates”.
What does real beauty mean to you?
One thing that I feel passionate about is beauty. Nowadays, people think that being beautiful is having a specific body type, or having perfect aligned and white teeth, or not wearing glasses, or having a clear complexion. However, beauty to me goes way deeper than the surface. Beauty is how you make everyone else feel around you, being able to spread kindness and happiness, being there for those who need you, hugging those who need one, giving a smile so someone who is having a rough day. That to me is beauty and someone who does that is “beautiful”.
What advice would you give to someone starting out on their fitness journey?
If someone is just starting their fitness journey, I would tell them “hang on because it is going to be a bumpy ride, it will be hard, but just keep going and don’t look back”.
Thanks Shannon! Cheer on Shannon in her fitness journey by following her @shannondancer11 on PumpUp!
